Lacerta trilineata cariensis (Carian Balkan Green Lizard) [in Turk. İri Yeşil Kertenkele, Yılan Ebesi] (Male)

This is the second post of this handsome lizard while basking on a rock which I captured at the trip to Yamanlar Mountain (approx. 1000m asl).

The subscpecific name, “cariensis” is came after the name of this Ancient Region of Anatolia, Caria, including its distribution (Izmir, Aydin and Denizli provinces).

Kangal (alternatives: Sivas Kangalı, Kangal Çoban Köpeği) is a breed of domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris), and is the national breed of Turkey [1] [2][3] [4][5] Kangal, which weigh between 120-170 pounds (55-78 kg) full-grown, was originally used as a livestock guardian dog. It is of an early mastiff type with a solid, pale tan or sabled coat, and with a black mask.

The breed is often referred to as a sheep dog, but it is not a herding dog, but rather a flock guardian. It lives with the flock and acts as a livestock guardian dog, fending off wolves, bears and jackals. The Sivas Kangal Dog's protectiveness and gentleness with small children and animals has led to its growing popularity as a guardian for families as well, as it regards people as its flock and guards them with extreme devotion.

Eastern Anatolian deciduous forests

This mountainous ecoregion is situated entirely in the eastern half of Turkey. It hosts a remarkable floristic feature known as the Anatolian Diagonal whose origins are not completely understood. Many plant species in Turkey occur only to the east or only to the west of this line. This is one of the richest floristic areas of Anatolia. The upper catchments of three major rivers are here, and vulnerable wildlife species such as the otter and wild goat inhabit the rugged landscape along with bear, fox and wolves. Due to centuries of human settlement, however, much of the original forest cover has been eliminated and remaining areas of natural vegetation are threatened by dam construction, afforestation programs and overgrazing. The Munzur Valley National Park was created to protect the region wildlife and scenic beauty, but additional protected areas are needed.

This region is considered one of the most important areas of plant biodiversity in Turkey (Ekim & Güner 1986, Ekim 1987, Boulos et al. 1994). Approximately 3,200 vascular plant species are found here, 725 of which are endemic to Turkey; 82 species are endemic to the Anti Taurus Mountains and about 165 species are endemic to the Upper Euphrates region (Boulos et al. 1994). The Munzur and Anti Taurus Mountains, the Elbistan-Darende region, Kemaliye, Keşiş Mountain, Harput and Hazar Lake are all recognized as biodiversity centers.

This region is home to several species classified by the IUCN as vulnerable, such as the otter (Lutra lutra) and wild goat (Capra aegagrus) (IUCN 2001). Other important mammals live here, such as the lynx (Felis lynx), bear (Ursus arctos), wolf (Canis lupus), red fox (Vulpes vulpes), boar (Sus scrofa), and ibex (Capra ibex). Trout (Salmo trutta) swim in the Munzur and Mercan rivers. Birds include chukar (Alectoris chukar), partridge (Perdix perdix) and eagles (Aquila spp.)(WCMC-UNEP 1988).

FERDYNAND THE MAGNIFICENT
FERDYNAND WSPANIAŁY

Ferdynand the Magnificent (Ferdynand Wspaniały) — the story of Ferdinand, a dog endowed
with human features, is part of the canon of Polish childen’s literature. Irrespective of
changing times and fashions, it continues to win the hearts and minds of new readers.
The book has run into many editions, been translated into several languages and made into
a movie.
The author says that Ferdinand the Magnificent was inspired by his own exceptionally gifted
a dog, which even had a talent for acting and played in the theatre.

Przygody Koziołka Matołka

They all center around the quest that Matołek, an anthropomorphic goat, undertakes: to find Pacanów, a town where it is rumored they are making goatshoes. Matołek's adventures are amusing if sometimes surreal, and the titular hero is nice, naive, clumsy, laughable and not very bright - in many regards similar to another famous children stories character, Winnie the Pooh of A.A. Milne. His search for Pacanów will take him to various corners of the Earth, from Africa to the Wild West.
The story has visible patriotic undertones, from Matołek's colors (white fur and red shorts, evoking the flag of Poland) to his homesick feelings for Poland, which appear when he finds himself in one of the far-away places.
